Sweet Brown Girls

A Photographic Collection by Jada Wallace

Description:

Sweet Brown Girls is a photographic series created by Jada Wallace to highlight the unique culture of Black women. This project serves as both an artistic expression and a cultural statement, challenging harmful stereotypes in the media and replacing them with a narrative that celebrates sisterhood, beauty, and self-expression.

"As a Black woman, I find this project deeply personal. I am committed to increasing the positive representation of Black women and offering a fresh, intimate perspective on how I see the women in my life." - Jada Wallace

The first 3 images in this collection are inspired by street-style fashion. The model and stylist, "Kassey" has a unique perspective to self expression through thrifted clothes, jewelry, and makeup. This look is an Immigrant Black woman's take on the Canadian Tux with the denim on denim and a red plaid skirt. Kassey's fashionista personality through to her struggles are a constant testament to the statement: Shadows remind us that light cannot exist without darkness.

The second 3 images are inspired by Solange Knowles and her iconic album cover for "A Seat at the Table". The model is accomplished writer , workshop facilitator, and keynote speaker, Diondra Filicetti. Filicetti is perfect for representing the defiance against power structures as a mixed-race Black woman.

The last 3 images are modelled by Fauziyah Gebi; a Nigerian Fashion Content Creator and Media Professional.

The use of the Hijab in these photos display a sense of freedom, floating, and poise. It's elegant and protective in nature with a deep sense of femininity and order. She models a posture of looking upward to represent a modern woman rooted in grace and liberty.

TIFF 2024

I applied for the TIFF Inclusion Initiative for a Press Pass in 2024 and I was accepted to create a press circuit for Youth Culture Inc.

My focus for youth culture had been creating content dedicated to social action and displaying the variety of jobs in the media and entertainment sector. I did this through explaining the role of press while taking images of the most diverse film cast and crew of TIFF 2024. As well as interviewing many different creators at the festival for the YC Podcast.

Media Release Included:

3 YC podcast episodes

Island
      Thyme

What started as a food photography assignment turned into a beautiful celebration of culture, identity and the one thing I believe brings Caribbeans together the most "food".

I approached a local restaurant Island Thyme to take some photos. Working alongside the owner Ms. Gail. I was able to style some of their dishes. This project opened up a love for food photography and appreciation for cultural food representation!
